Open fire prohibitions coming as weather warms

KAMLOOPS - Fire restrictions are coming later this week to help stem the number of human caused wildfires during the summer.

Category two or three fires are being prohibited in the Kamloops Fire Centre between June 15 and October 15. The fire centre covers most of south central B.C., including the Nicola, Okanagan, Thompson and Shuswap regions.

The types of fires prohibited include burning waste or slash bigger than a half meter by a half meter, burning more than two open fires at the same time, stubble or grass fires, using fireworks, burning in barrels and using binary exploding targets.

Campfires are not banned as long as they are under a half meter by a half meter. Any cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes are allowed.

The prohibition is in place for all lands within the Kamloops Fire Centre unless local governments have bylaws concerning forest fire protection and a fire department.

The province says fines for breaking the prohibition range up to $1,150 or, if it goes to court, fines up to $100,000 and a year in jail. If a wildfire is started due to someone breaking the prohibition, they may receive a fine up to $10,000 and have to pay all associated costs.

To report a wildfire, call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cellphone.
