One petition is trying to stop nightmarish murals in Vernon while another tries to keep the dream alive

After a petition was launched yesterday in defiance of the creepy murals coming to Vernon, another one has been started in favour of them.

“We support the proposed 'Behind the Mask' murals and welcome more,” reads the counter-petition started by Vernon resident Kimberly Fuller, according to Change.org.

That petition says the city – which has committed $33,000 to the project – already spends $10,000 per year on maintaining its existing murals. While the first petition complains the project won’t “even completed by local artists,” the counter-petition points out how the subjects – people wearing paper machete masks – are local.

“These are intimate portraits. They deserve respect. They deserve to be seen,” reads the counter-petition.

“We welcome alternative stories. We welcome art that challenges us.”

The first petition was started by Sharmay Taylor. It calls the murals scary and awful, complains that locals were not consulted, and has gathered nearly 2,000 signatures by the time of publication.

The counter-petition had more than 100 names by the time of publication.

- This story was corrected June 5, 2022 as Fuller is a Vernon, not West Kelowna resident.
