A man was killed in a Shuswap house fire yesterday, while four others escaped with their lives.
The Tappen-Sunnybrae Fire Department was called to the the house fire in the 1100 Block of Tappen-Notch Hill Road at approximately 6:45 a.m. yesterday, Dec. 17, and found the home fully engulfed in smoke with flames coming out of the windows, according to a Columbia Shuswap Regional District media release.
“Our deepest condolences go out to his loved ones,” regional district fire services co-ordinator Sean Coubrough said in the release. “Everyone working on this fire feels a sense of sorrow at this loss and wishes there was a different outcome. It was a very, very difficult day.”
Four adults and one youth were also inside the residence and were able to escape.
One person was taken to hospital for treatment of minor burns and smoke inhalation, while the remaining people were assessed and released by B.C. Ambulance Service paramedics.
Regional district fire services are supporting those who were affected by the fire, as two people were living in suites that have been destroyed.
Fire crews were on scene for approximately eight hours and are investigating the cause of the blaze with the Fire Commissioner.
