A crash in Kamloops sent multiple people to hospital Wednesday afternoon and killed one person.

Emergency crews were called to McGill Road and University Drive around 3 p.m., where a black Dodge Ram collided with five vehicles in total, according to Kamloops RCMP.

The truck hit several trees then a Volkswagen stopped at a red light. All three people inside the car were taken to hospital.

The truck then hit four other vehicles. Two people inside a jeep were also sent to hospital, but their injuries were not life-threatening.

Two people inside the Volkswagen are being treated for serious injuries, but the extent of those injuries isn't currently known, according to police. The other person inside the car died as a result.

“Our hearts are broken for the victims and their families involved in this terrible tragedy,” Kamloops RCMP Supt. Jeff Pelley said in a news release. “The three young adults in the Volkswagen were all members of the community in their 20s, and the loss is sure to have far reaching impacts as we struggle to understand what happened and advance the active investigation as a priority.”

The Kamloops RCMP traffic unit is leading the investigation. Anyone with information or video footage can contact the detachment at 250-828-3000.
