UPDATE: Evacuations ordered after mudslide near Salmon Arm

SALMON ARM - One man is missing after a mudslide overnight in Tappen surrounded his home in mud.

Salmon RCMP have confirmed a 76-year-old man is missing after a home was hit by a mudslide early this morning, May 6. Police responded to a call in the 5900 area of Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road in Tappen and found one home enveloped in mud. Other homes may have been damaged by the slide as well.

“We can confirm to date that we have spoken to family of the 76-year-old male resident, who was last known to be inside the home,” Cpl Dan Moskaluk says in a press release. “The Salmon RCMP has activated resources from the Shuswap Search and Rescue Team, Tappen and Salmon Arm Fire Departments.

“As of this morning the Columbia Shuswap Regional District representatives began assessing the situation in order to safely access and make entry into the home to search for the man.”

An evacuation order has been issued for 13 properties located at 5866, 5874, 5882, 5890, 5900, 5921, 5922, 5932, 5933, 5940, 5941, 5947, and 5948 Sunnybrae-Canoe Point Road.

The slide blocked road access to around 100 homes and Salmon Arm RCMP have evaluated several other residences which were at risk.
