One dead in vehicle collision in Ashcroft

Police responded to a two vehicle collision on Highway 97C in Ashcroft yesterday in which one male was found dead at the scene.

Ashcroft RCMP attended to the accident involving a commercial transport vehicle and a pickup truck towing a holiday trailer on Highway 97C near Barnes Road, around 4 p.m. July 1.

Preliminary findings indicate that the unloaded rear trailers of a commercial tractor-trailer travelling westbound downhill slid sideways across the lanes striking the eastbound pickup truck, according to an RCMP press release.

Initial indications are that speed relative to road conditions was a primary contributing factor.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 51-year-old man from Vanderhoof, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His wife in the passenger seat was taken to the Royal Inland Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and has since been released.

The driver of the commercial vehicle, from Idaho, United States, was not injured.

The RCMP and B.C. Coroners Service are both conducting separate investigations.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Central Interior Traffic Services at 250-378-4262.
