A woman died in an apartment fire in downtown Kelowna yesterday.

Kelowna RCMP and the Kelowna Fire Department responded to an apartment fire in the 700-block of Bernard Avenue around 5:30 p.m. on July 12, according to a press release from police.

RCMP said a 42-year-old woman died in the fire.

“We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of the victim and will be providing any necessary support services. Thank you to the Kelowna Fire Department, Salvation Army and City of Kelowna who assisted in accommodating the individuals displaced by the fire,” Cpl. Michael Gauthier said in the release.

When the fire crews arrived they saw smoke and flames coming out of a second storey window. Firefighters quickly knocked the fire down and contained it to one suite, according to a release from the fire department.

First responders were on the scene overnight to make sure there were no hotspots and the fire was completely extinguished.

A total of 17 residents received care from the Emergency Support Service, and BC Transit brought in a bus to temporarily shelter displaced residents in the hot weather.

The building is cordoned off so investigators can determine the cause of the fire, but the fire department is advising the public to be careful when smoking and using anything flammable especially in extremely hot weather.
