Sport injury Centre in Calgary gets nod from International Olympic Committee

CALGARY - The Sport Injury Prevention Research Centre at the University of Calgary has been selected as one of four facilities to do research for the International Olympic Committee.

The IOC says the Calgary centre will help establish long-term research on injury and disease prevention, including studies on basic epidemiology, risk factors, injury mechanisms and interventions.

"This partnership reflects the international leadership role that our centre has taken in researching and preventing injury in a variety of sports," said Dr. Willem Meeuwisse, co-chairman of the centre.

The other research centres are located in Cape Town, South Africa, Melbourne, Australia and Oslo, Norway.

An official ceremony marking the centre's recognition is set for Monday at the Olympic Oval in Calgary.
