Oliver man arrested after hours-long standoff

FILE PHOTO

An Oliver man barricaded himself inside a home when RCMP responded to a domestic assault last night.

Oliver RCMP were called to the 5800 block of Main Street around 9 p.m., Feb. 20, where the victim safely got out of the home, according to an Oliver RCMP news release.

With guns inside the home, a 47-year-old man barricaded himself in and threatened to harm himself if anyone came to the door.

The Southeast District Critical Incident Response Team brought a crisis negotiator to help get him into custody.

The incident lasted until 2:30 a.m., when police used "distraction devices" and negotiated with the man until he finally left the home.

He's was arrested and faces potential assault and firearms charges, but the investigation is still ongoing, RCMP said.
