A suspicious fire was doused by Oliver Fire Department volunteer firefighters before it could get into the main part of the Global Grocers on Highway 97 in Oliver.

The grocery store owners, who live next door, were alerted to the fire by neighbours at about 10 p.m. yesterday, March 13.

“Our brave firefighters fought this huge fire hard amid strong gusts of wind until 2 a.m. and have managed to minimize the damage and fire was contained by smart decisions made by the team to save our main business building, our bread and butter,” states a message on the store’s Facebook page credited to owners Riz, Deepak and Aarav.

“The wooden fence, our storage area and another part of structure has been burnt to the ground. It was a busy night for firefighters as there was another vehicle fire at the same time. We are still processing the whole situation and we are overwhelmed by our community's and valued customers messages. Thank you. Thank you.”

The phone at the store was answered by a recording saying it was not being monitored for now. Fire chief Bob Graham was too busy when contacted by iNFOnews.ca to comment further.

A fire department news release says the fire is suspicious, as was a nearby car fire that was extinguished on the same evening, but there is no apparent connection between the two fires.

Crews were called in from Osoyoos Fire Department to assist.
