OLIVER - Oliver firefighters were called to a deck fire on Highway 97 early this morning.

Oliver fire department spokesperson Rob Graham says ashes from a wood buring appliance left on a resident’s deck smouldered for several hours before igniting, causing limited damage to the deck structure.

Firefighters responded to the call around 2 a.m. this morning, Dec. 2.

Graham says the homeowner had extinguished the fire prior to the fire department arriving, but one engine remained on scene for around an hour to ensure the fire was out.

He advises residents using wood burning appliances to heat their homes to make sure residual ashes are collected in a metal receptacle and ensure they are extinguished before disposing of them.
