VERNON - If you awoke to find your furnace had shifted into gear overnight, you're not the only one.

Temperatures in the Okanagan and Kamloops have taken a steep drop going into the weekend, Environment Canada's forecast shows. Both Vernon and Kelowna will see a high of 8 C today, Saturday, Sept. 24, and Penticton and Kamloops aren't far better off at 10 C and 11 C, respectively. All four cities see a chance of rain.

But it's what happens above 1,000 metres that truly indicates the seasonal shift.

An estimated five to 10 centimetres of snow accumulated on the Coquihalla Highway overnight, Environment Canada said in a statement issued Saturday morning. An additional two to five centimetres are expected to fall this morning on the Coquihalla, Allison Pass and Penask Summit. Rogers Pass will also see some snow, but not as much as the Coquihalla. The snow will continue throughout the weekend.

While the snow impacts driving conditions on area mountain passes, it also is a sure sign of the ski season to come.

Big White Ski Resort, for one, was excited to see the snow.

"On Friday morning, two centimetres of that beautiful Okanagan Champagne Powder dusted the mountain – and while the afternoon sun melted it away, there's more snow on the way tonight (Friday), tomorrow, Sunday and Monday," Michael Ballingal, senior vice-president of sales and marketing, said in a press release. "It may not look like much, but every flake counts."

A light dusting of snow also fell on SilverStar Mountain Resort.

Provincial winter tire and chain-up regulations go into effect Tuesday, Oct. 1.
