Okanagan Rail Trail and O'Keefe Ranch get provincial cash

Kilometre zero at the northern end of the Okangan Rail Trail in Coldstream, B.C., is seen in this photo taken, Sunday, April 5, 2020.

The provincial government has dished out almost $1.4 million to tourism projects in the North Okanagan.

The large injection of cash will go towards the construction of Coldstream Station on Kalamalka Road, at the beginning of the Okanagan Rail Trail.

The province has put $624,257 towards the project which will include an event plaza, parking, washrooms, and visitor information, and be a starting point for the Okanagan Rail Trail.

Pitched as an idea in 2019, the O'Keefe Ranch is moving forward with its plan to build a glamping campsite at the historic ranch.

The province has put forward $245,085 towards the glamourous camping project which would see 10 glamping tents pitched at the ranch.

The Greater Vernon Museum and Archives was also a benefactor of some money with the province granting $280,896 to do upgrades to the museum's roof, HVAC system and fix electrical and lighting issues. The province says the move will help to protect collection items and enhance the operations of the museum and create new COVID safe cultural event spaces.

The City of Vernon is set to have three new timber frame visitor kiosks with a provincial grant of $242,000.

The kiosks will supply information on attractions, activities, arts, culture, and events says the province.
