When you’re riding along the Okanagan Rail Trail this summer, look for volunteers in bright yellow vests.

Volunteer trail ambassadors are riding along the trail, sharing information and providing trail maps and brochures, according to the District of Lake Country.

The Friends of the Okanagan Rail Trail are also looking for volunteers for the program, and the next training session will be held May 10.

Email volunteer@okanaganrailtrail.ca if you’re interested in becoming a trail ambassador.

The non-profit society, Friends of the Okanagan Rail Trail was created to support future work of the trail and includes the trail ambassadors.

Many of the non-profit's founding members come from the Okanagan Rail Trail Initiative, the volunteer group that supported community fundraising to build the trail, according to the non-profit's website.

Once completed, the rail trail will stretch for roughly 52 kilometres, from Coldstream to downtown Kelowna.

Work begins next week in the north end of downtown to bring the rail trail to the waterfront.

That leaves only a seven-kilometre stretch from the airport to Lake Country that still needs to be built in order to complete the path all the way to Coldstream. The Okanagan Indian Band is still waiting for the federal government to transfer a section along Duck Lake to the band.
