A woman holding a sign for the Parents Voice West Kelowna trustee candidate was told to move after standing too close to a voting station.

She was seen standing with a "Laurie Bowen for school trustee" sign at the corner of Highway 97 and Brown Road, not far from the Lions Community Hall voting station this afternoon, Oct. 15. Today is election day.

“Election staff were notified of the situation near Lion’s Hall Community Centre polling station” and the person was told to move out of the restricted zone, said Kari O’Rourke, with the communications department with city hall.

“Candidates are reminded they are not permitted to campaign within 100 metres of a polling station. Regular sweeps are done throughout Election Day.”

As outlined in the local government act, “a person must not do any of the following at or within 100 metres of a building, structure or other place where voting proceedings are being conducted at the time: canvass or solicit votes or otherwise attempt to influence how an elector votes; display, distribute, post or openly leave a representation of a ballot marked for a particular result in the voting; post, display or distribute election advertising, or any material that identifies a candidate or elector organization unless this is done with the authorization of the chief election officer.”

Polls are open for B.C. municipalities until 8 p.m. tonight.
