PENTICTON - There could be some boat traffic jams at Okanagan Lake Marina this summer as the city will likely lose use of one of its two boat ramps at the facility.
Boats have started to run aground while trying to access the ramp as sediment caused by boat propellers has built up over time, made worse by low water levels. In a few cases, the boats had to be craned out of the lake.
The west launch is now closed, leaving only the east boat launch at the marina in serviceable condition.
Penticton's general manager of infrastructure Mitch Moroziuk told council members Tuesday, May 7 said if the lake level were to rise, the launch could be reopened.
He requested council authorization for up to $100,000 from the marina reserve to rebuild the ramp. Technical details for the work are required so it's unlikely the work will begin before this fall or possibly next spring.
The only other boat launch in the City of Penticton is at Skaha Lake Marina, which accesses Skaha Lake.
The nearest boat launch on Okanagan Lake beyond the city is at Soorimpt Day-use Park, just north of Penticton on Highway 97.
Only one of Okanagan Lake Marina's two boat ramps will be in operation this summer.
