Okanagan College students collect 5,000 lbs of non-perishables for food banks

Enactus Okanagan College students weren’t scared to face hunger head on this Halloween. The students collected more than 5,000lbs of non-perishables for local food banks by hosting collection events on Oct. 31 at Save-on-Foods in Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton.

The Trick or Eat campaign, which also saw students going door-to-door for donations, is part of the Help Hunger Disappear Challenge—a cross-Canada initiative sponsored by the Campbell Company of Canada.

“This initiative is important because it brings short-term hunger relief to those that need it most, and raises awareness on the issue of hunger in our community,” says Brittney Weatherill, a fourth year Okanagan College business student and Enactus Okanagan College’s vice-president of sponsorship.

“I got involved because Enactus enables me to give back to my community and help individuals with a hand up, not just a hand out,” she says.

Since the program’s inception, Enactus Okanagan College has collected more than 270,000lbs of food, which helped them win the Help Hunger Disappear National Championship for four years running, beating out teams from Saint Mary’s University, Thompson Rivers University and Wilfred Laurier University.

“Once again, the Campbell Company of Canada is excited to work with the team at Enactus Okanagan College,” said Ron Jean, Campbell Manager of B.C. Interior. “The energy and commitment they bring to such an important cause is inspiring.”

Enactus Okanagan College is a non-profit student-run organization in Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton and Salmon Arm that develops and implements projects in their communities that improve the quality of life and standard of living across the region.
