Okanagan and Kamloops ski hills limit lift operations due to extreme cold

With temperatures ranging from -22 Celsius to -29 C, the four major ski hills in the Thompson-Okanagan have shut down some lifts again today.

Sun Peaks Ski Resort, at -25 C, has closed the Burfield lift with the start up of the Chrystal and Sundance lifts being delayed.

Silver Star Mountain Resort is the warmest at -22 C. It’s continuing with its closure of the Putnam Creek area that started Monday.

Big White Ski Resort is -29 so the Gem Lake Express and Black Forest Express are on standby this morning.

Apex Mountain Resort is at -26 C so the Stocks Chair will stay closed all day. The Quad chair is closed to start the day but is expected to run later.

Despite the cold, there is optimism about the warming, snowy days ahead.

“We will soon say goodbye to the extreme cold and hello to fresh snow, lots of it.” Silver Star posted on its webpage.

“Snow will start falling at the resort overnight Thursday into Friday, and then continue falling into the weekend as one wave of Pacific moisture after another moves inland.”
