Officials determining next steps following discovery of historic human remains in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS - After the discovery of human remains halted work at a Valleyview job site in Kamloops, officials are in talks about what happens next.

On Aug. 17, remains were reported at a location on Valleyview Drive, and the B.C. Coroners Service says it was able to determine the remains were archaeological, meaning they are not recent.

A spokesperson with the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development says ancestral remains were identified and are protected under the Heritage Conservation Act. The site where the remains were located will also be added to the provincial Heritage Register, and Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc will be involved in helping determine the next steps.

The ministry states more information will be release as it becomes available.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie confirmed the discovery of the remains, but said police are not involved because no criminality is believed to be involved.
