Officer assaulted at Okanagan Correctional Centre

B.C Corrections says in a statement a corrections officer at Okanagan Correctional Centre was victim to an assault by an inmate on Feb. 13, 2018.

OLIVER - An officer at Okanagan Correctional Centre was the victim of an assault by an inmate earlier this week.

B.C. Corrections confirmed today in an email an officer at the Okanagan Correctional Centre was treated in hospital for injuries Feb. 13. He has since returned to the centre, and is recovering with the support of colleagues, friends and family, the statement said.

Three officers were in the unit at the time of the assault along with approximately 37 inmates.

“B.C. Corrections has a zero tolerance policy on violence and the safety of our staff and inmates is always our number one priority. Any time there is an incident involving violence of any degree, it is reviewed and, where appropriate, reported to police, which may result in inmates being charged internally or facing criminal charges," B.C Corrections said in a statement.

B.C. Corrections says work is ongoing to keep staff and inmates safe and to prevent future assaults from happening.
