MONTREAL - Two-time Oscar winner Frederick Back, who moved to Canada from Germany in 1948, has died at the age of 89.
Back earned his first Oscar in 1982 when "Crac!" won in the Animated Short Film Category.
He followed that up in 1988 with success in the same category for "L'homme qui plantait des arbres," whose English title was "The Man Who Planted Trees."
Back, who also earned two other Oscar nominations, was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1990.
He was also well-known as an illustrator and as a screenwriter.
The ardent environmentalist and animal-rights activist taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Montreal shortly after arriving in Quebec. He later joined Radio-Canada's graphic department.
Back was also the creator of the sprawling stained-glass mural at Montreal's Place-des-Arts subway station in 1967.
