There are now 146 people in intensive care units in B.C. with COVID-19, up five from yesterday and is the highest number since the record 178 recorded in April.
The number of people in hospital with a COVID positive test fell by one to 987, according to a Ministry of Health news release issued today, Feb. 8.
About half the of people in hospital with a COVID diagnosis were not in there because of COVID but were tested after going to hospital for things like surgery, delivering a baby or being admitted to a mental health unit.
The number of new COVID cases in B.C. over the last 24 hours was down to 1,117 but 376, or 34%, were in the Interior Health region.
The real number in hospital is estimated to be three to four times higher because many people infected with COVID are not getting tested or take rapid tests that are not recorded in these figures.
There were 189 new cases in Fraser Health, 180 in Vancouver Coastal, 175 on Vancouver Island and 192 in the Northern Health region.
There were no new deaths.
