An officer with the Kelowna RCMP’s traffic section is pleading with drivers to slow down after the most recent case of excessive speeding in a residential area.

An officer clocked a driver going 106 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Springfield Road near View Road on Tuesday, July 16, according to an RCMP media release.

At the same time, another speed trap on Highway 33 near Garner Road caught a driver going 108 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.

Police point out that this was far from the first case of excessive speeding on Highway 33.

Both drivers had their vehicles impounded for seven days and were handed $368 speeding tickets, and the tickets could mean further penalties from ICBC.

RCMP Sgt. Colby Attlesey with the municipal traffic section, by way of example, points out the driving distance between Kelowna and Vernon is about 50 kilometres and speeding doesn’t save you much time.

“The time difference between driving 90km/h and 130km/h over that distance is 10 minutes. Is 10 minutes worth $368 and a vehicle impound?” Sgt. Attlesey said in the release.

“Speed is a leading cause of fatal collisions in BC and it is certainly not worth your life or the lives of those around you, so please, obey the speed limits.”
