NORTH OKANAGAN - Coldstream writer Laisha Rosnau has made the shortlist of the 2020 Kobzar Book Award putting her in the running to scoop the $25,000 prize.

The North Okanagan writer made the list with her book of poetry Our Familiar Hunger.

The Kobzar Book Award is held every two years and focuses on outstanding contributions to Canadian literature that have a connection to the Ukrainian Canadian experience.

The book, which has already won the B.C Book Prize for Poetry, the Dorothy Livesay Award, explores that Ukrainian Canadian experience.

According to Rosnau's website, the book was influenced by her grandparents, who immigrated to Canada from Ukraine. The poems explore the lives of Eastern European women, both in a historical and contemporary context.

Shifting from the Russian revolution to the Ukrainian famine and onto prisoner camps across Canada during the First World War, the collection of poems then moves to the 21st century focussing on migration, the international sex trade, and internet-arranged marriage.

According to the Kobzar Book Award, the prize creates a place for the Ukrainian Canadian experience and its stories. The winner will be announced in March 2020.
