The MP for the North Okanagan-Shuswap announced he is backing an Ontario politician in the Conservative leadership race.
On Saturday, April 9, Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre, who represents the riding of Carleton, Ont., addressed a large crowd at Sunset Ranch in Kelowna.
“More than a thousand people came out to Kelowna today with a clear message: they are ready to take back control of their lives,” Poilievre wrote on Twitter.
Kelowna-Lake Country MP Tracy Gray and Central Okanagan-Similkameen-Nicola MP Dan Albas were also in attendance. Both have publicly backed Poilievre to be the next Conservative Party leader.

Poilievre also spoke in Vernon on Saturday night at the Shubert Centre and noted there was also a crowd of about 1,000 people. North Okanagan–Shuswap MP Mel Arnold announced he has also thrown his hat behind Poilievre to be the next party leader.
"I'm convinced he is the best choice to lead our CPC and our country. I officially announced my endorsement of Pierre at the close of tonight's event," Arnold wrote on Twitter.
With Sept. 10 picked as the date for when the Conservative Party of Canada will have a new leader, time is ticking for prospective candidates and their teams to get into place. Those running have until April 19 to throw their hat into the ring and until June 3 to sell memberships.
Poilievre, 42, declared his candidacy days after former leader Erin O’Toole was ousted. One of his chief promises is to cancel the federal carbon tax.
Other candidates vying to be the Conservative party leader include: Leslyn Lewis, Roman Baber, Jean Charest, Patrick Brown, Joseph Bourgault, Scott Aitchison, Marc Dalton, Leona Alleslev, Joel Etienne and Bobby Singh.
