UPDATE: Severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect for North Okanagan, Shuswap

FILE PHOTO

The North Okanagan and Shuswap could see thunderstorms, strong winds, hail and heavy rain this afternoon.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch today, July 24, which continues this afternoon for the North Okanagan, including Vernon and the Shuswap, including Salmon Arm. The watch is no longer in effect for the North Thompson.

Conditions are just right for severe thunderstorms to develop which are capable of producing strong wind gust, large hail and heavy rain.

The severe thunderstorm watch says large hail can damage property and cause injury, while strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. It goes on to say intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops, and heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Environment Canada warns that lightning can kill, so go indoors when thunder roars.

Weather warnings and forecasts and can monitored through Environment Canada's website here. To report severe weather, send an email to BCstorm@canada.ca or tweet reports using #BCStorm.
