PENTICTON - The prospects for Mount Baldy Ski Area opening this season are all downhill following a court appearance by the ski hill’s receiver G-Force Group earlier this week.
The on-again, off-again saga of the ski hill appears to off for the 2015/2016 season as potential operators of the resort are no longer interested in attempting to open the area, located 37 kilometres east of Oliver, this late in the season.
Gary Powroznik with G-Force Group says the possibility of opening for the season melted away this week following a court appearance on Monday, Nov. 30 in which his company sought direction from the court as to how to proceed with a new offer from a prospective purchaser it had received last week.
“Baldy Capital showed up in court on Monday, opposing what we were trying to do. If we weren’t opposed we would have gone through court quite quickly,” Powroznik says.
He says court was understaffed and as a result was unable to hear the application.
“They didn’t even hear our application, they said, well, come back Friday. We were trying to enter into an operating agreement with a new party for this year’s operating season, and as a result of not being heard Monday, we lost our opportunity for insurance, and our party lost interest in operating the resort this year because it’s getting too late in the season,” Powroznik says, adding he’s sure the courts would have approved the G-Force application had it been heard.
G-Force Group issued a media release on Nov. 27 in which it stated the initial operator of the resort had “been unable to follow up with an acceptable offer to acquire the assets or provide an acceptable plan to operate the resort for this season.”
The release went on to say G-Force Group had received an offer from another party and both parties are actively making a great deal of effort to complete a deal as soon as possible.
A statement from the Baldy Capital Corporation on the Mount Baldy website today reads, “Baldy Capital Corporation regrets that it has not been able to complete the acquisition of Mount Baldy Ski Area on the time line anticipated and will not be in a position to open or operate the ski hill for the 2015/16 winter season. We remain committed to completing the acquisition and will continue to post updates on this site as they are available.”
