Two COVID-19 outbreaks in Lower Mainland health-care facilities show that the pandemic is still potent in B.C.
That’s a key message from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix in a media release today, June 17.
There were 19 new cases in the province in the last 24 hours. None of them were in the Interior Health region but the Lower Mainland outbreaks are a concern.
"We know that COVID-19 spreads quickly and can be transmitted to others even when someone is asymptomatic or has mild symptoms,” the release states. “One undetected case can quickly result in a surge in new cases.”
One outbreak was at the Mission Memorial Hospital so local residents can now only receive urgent and emergency treatment at the facility.
"As we expect increased travel within our province over the summer months, this is a reminder that the impact on small communities with limited health-care resources can be severe,” the release states. "As a result, we ask British Columbians to continue to take all measures to ensure you are safely increasing your social interactions, you are being respectful of communities you may be visiting when on the road.”
The 19 new cases brings the provincial total to 2,775. Of those, there are 185 active cases and 2,422 people have fully recovered.
There have been 196 cases in the Interior Health region with no new cases during the past five days.
There were no new deaths in the last day so 168 people have died from the disease.
