TORONTO - An anesthesiologist jailed for sexually assaulting 21 sedated women during surgeries has been denied bail while he appeals his conviction.
An Appeal Court justice ruled that George Doodnaught has little chance of succeeding in his challenge.
Given the seriousness of the offences, the judge found immediate enforcement of the 10-year sentence to be in the public interest.
The 65-year-old Doodnaught was convicted in November for sexual assaults in the operating room.
His lawyer had argued he posed no risk of reoffending because his licence is under suspension.
In denying bail, the Appeal Court said it makes little difference that his challenge to his conviction might only be heard 18 months from now.
