Shipping container goes adrift, snagged and towed in St. John's, N.L., harbour

A tugboat hauls a runaway Canadian Tire container on Wed. Jan. 15, 2014 in St.John's, N.b. THE CANADIAN PRESS/stf

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - A Canadian Tire shipping container had to be towed to safety today after it drifted across the St. John's harbour.

The St. John's Port Authority deferred to shipping company Oceanex when asked how the container wound up loose.

A spokeswoman for Oceanex was not immediately available.

It appeared there were no collisions before a small boat nudged the container to a harbour wall where a tugboat came to its rescue.

Photos of the strange sight appeared on social media, including Twitter.
