KELOWNA – A 21-year-old Kelowna man was sentenced to nine months in jail today for sexually assaulting his 14-year-old sister at Big White Ski Resort two years ago.
The man’s identity is protected by a publication ban but he was 19 years old in August 2015 when he and his siblings were at a recreational property at Big White.
At some point during the night, he made inappropriate contact with his sister, who was 14 years old at the time.
Judge Brad Chapman said in Kelowna Provincial Court today, Dec. 1, that she left the room, but with nowhere to go, returned.
Her brother then forced himself on her.
“She was frightened, she was scared,” Chapman said. “Paralyzed.”
The man confessed what he did to their parents soon after and turned himself in to police.
He pleaded guilty to one count of sexual interference of a minor.
Some members of his family were present when he addressed the court.
“I’m extremely sorry for what I’ve done to my sister and what it’s done to her life,” he said. “I have taken responsibility for what I’ve done. Since day one I believe I have done everything I could have done to try and right the wrong. I’m sorry to everyone that’s affected.”
Chapman accepted a joint submission from Crown and defence, calling a sentence of nine months in jail “appropriate” given his remorse.
“He realized the inappropriateness of what he had done… turned himself in and took steps to talk to a counsellor,” he said.
