PENTICTON - The City of Penticton is preparing to begin the next section of restoration of Penticton Creek.
The city said in a press release issued today, July 23, work on another 80 metre section of the creek bed should begin with the opening of the “fish window” on July 28.
The window is the best time seasonally to minimize the effects of the creek work on native fish species.
This next phase will complete the section of the creek between Ellis Street bridge and Nanaimo Avenue bridge, and will consist of removal of the old concrete surface, widening and deepening of the channel to increase flow capacity and installation of a rock liner to the channel.
City Engineer Ian Chapman says the completed appearance will be similar to the first phase, which was completed in 2015.
H&M Excavating won the half million dollar contract, which will be overseen by Mould Engineering and Aarde Environmental in accordance with a permit under the water sustainability act.
Minor work may get underway prior to opening of the fish window, which runs until Aug. 24. A temporary creek diversion pipe will be placed in the creek bed during the restoration work.
"The City received positive feedback on the first section of this project which tied together our community’s need for replacing important creek infrastructure, while also supporting environmental efforts to return creeks and streams to a more natural state”, said Penticton Mayor Andrew Jakubeit.
The project to restore the Penticton Creek channel began in 2016 and will be completed in stages as financing becomes available.
