NORTH OKANAGAN - When a stove or microwave is broken beyond repair, it's hard to know where to send it. A new program in the North Okanagan is providing an answer by taking busted major appliances off residents' hands.
Starting Jan. 1, 2019, the Regional District of North Okanagan will accept major appliances at all diversion and disposal facilities free of charge, according to a media release. The program is part of the District's new partnership with the Major Appliance Recycling Roundtable stewardship agency.
The District will decommission major appliances on-site and recycle the scrap metal.
The District Board of Directors approved the new program at their Dec. 12 meeting.
"We hope the program will also deter people from illegally dumping their appliances since it is now free and easy to dispose of them responsibly,” board chair Kevin Acton said in the release.
