Across the Okanagan, structures that have been damaged by wildfire and flooding need to be rebuilt. It should come as no surprise the BC construction industry has been actively looking for ways to improve exterior covering materials. That drive for change has produced exciting innovations, including a new product catching the eye of builders and homeowners.
MEGCRETe Sheathing: Resistant to Fire, Water, and Mold
The technical specifications on the official site for MEGCRETe Sheathing are impressive. MEGCRETe is listed as non-flammable, with higher mold and water-resistant characteristics than conventional siding products.

How is it Made?
MEGCRETe is a mineral and cement-based product made from environmentally sustainable products. The sheathing is made with a technique that weaves fibreglass into a fire-resistant, eco-friendly cement. It is non-toxic, and there is no off-gassing (like with many glue-lam or OSB products). The product itself is not new - it has been out for years and has undergone extensive testing - but the options for purchasing MEGCRETe and how it can now be used have recently been updated.
Where Can it be Used?
MEGCRETe has a multitude of uses. It can replace OSB board, drywall, plywood, and more. Because it comes in thicknesses all the way up to ¾ of an inch, the potential for MEGCRETe is practically limitless. The official site lists installation options including floors, walls, and ceilings. Wet locations such as backsplashes are also listed. Builders are excited that MEGCRETe has several edge options, too; square, beveled, tongue and groove, and tapered.
MEGCRETe is being used in residential construction, commercial buildings, and anywhere that high fire-code requirements are needed (such as firewalls and elevator shafts). Because of the materials’ natural mildew-resistant qualities, indoor growers, and municipal buildings with indoor pools are also key areas where MEGCRETe is taking hold.

Because it is practically impervious to water, unavoidable construction delays or heavy weather become more manageable when MEGCRETe is used. With standard building materials, construction delays (such as poor weather during the construction phase) can have long lasting effects post-construction - something that is far less likely to happen when using MEGCRETe.
The way that MEGCRETe stands up to fire or water can mean big savings when accidents happen. According to local suppliers, the savings can be substantial on remediation costs or insurance fees related to flooding and fire - but the initial cost difference for purchase and install of MEGCRETe is not much different than conventional products.
Approved For Construction in Canada
MEGCRETe has been authorized for use in the United States for many years and is now also approved in Canada. And while there are other products similar to MEGCRETe, it is the only brand of this type of sheathing currently approved for use in Canada.
