Skiers and snowboarders at Big White Mountain ski resort will have more access to parking this season after a new parking lot was recently cleared, and it is large enough to hold 250 vehicles.

It is the first phase of a $600,000 dollar parking lot at the Black Forest ski lift with more blasting scheduled for the summer next year to expand it further to hold roughly 450 vehicles.

“It’s important for us, it’s one of the most popular lifts on the mountain, that’s why we applied,” said the resort's senior vice president Michael J. Ballingall. “It’s been well received with the locals. There is a big locker room there and sometimes people couldn’t find a place to park and we’ll alleviate all of that.”

It took just over a year to get the license to cut and roughly two weeks after the permits were in place clearing began.

As of Monday, Oct. 15, the lot was cut, cleared and graded just in time for the snow to fall.

Ballingall said there isn’t any gravel on the lot yet, so it will get muddy in the spring, but as soon as the ground freezes the lot will be available for the coming season.
