Drivers can now fill up on the long drive between Kelowna and Merritt with the opening of a new gas station along Highway 97C.

The gas station at the former Elkhart Lodge site roughly halfway up the Okanagan Connector is sporting new open signs along the route.

Last year, an OCP amendment went before the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen to allow the development. At the time, the proposal included a restaurant, commercial card lock facility and a highway maintenance yard at the lodge.

The proponent said at the time the development would provide an "opportunity to service an area presently lacking,” with no other options to get gas, have a meal or rest on that stretch of high mountain highway, adding the development could eventually create 30 to 50 full time jobs.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen approved of the proposal back in 2019.
