An 18-year-old novice driver was charged last week after driving 187 km/h near Abbotsford.

The driver of an Audi A3 was pulled over about 7:30 p.m. on Highway 11, between Abbotsford and Mission, in an 80 km/h zone so was travelling 107 km/h over the speed limit, according to an Abbotsford Police Department news release.

The young man had a 17-year-old passenger with him.

The car was towed and will be impounded for seven days. The driver’s licence will be reviewed by the Superintendent of the Motor Vehicles.

Fines for excessive speeding (starting at more than 40 km/hr over the speed limit) start at $368 and can increase up to $483 plus an automatic three demerit points. The driver may also face a driver risk premium on his insurance.
