New dates for Salmon Arm Roots and Blues as organizers try to avoid wildfire smoke

Salmon Arm Roots and Blues music festival has announced it’s going to happen earlier than usual next year.

The festival will be taking place next year from July 26- to July 28, rather than the usual August dates, according to a Roots and Blue media release issued today, Nov 9.

The dates are earlier in the summer because the last festival was cancelled due to wildfires. After the first day of the festival the smoke was too thick for health and safety.

Salmon Arm Folk Music Society, which runs the festival, says the new dates will avoid the peak of the wildfire season and make for a better festival.

“The Salmon Arm Folk Music Society has faced its fair share of financial bumps and threats from the COVID pandemic and the recent fires in the Shuswap,” David Gonella, the society’s executive director said in the release. “At every turn, we’ve been eager to find a positive solution. Changing dates isn’t a band-aid fix but a chance to be better prepared.”

The music society’s artistic director Kevin Tobin is optimistic next year’s Roots and Blues will be a triumphant return for the festival.

“These new dates help ensure Roots and Blues remains a vibrant and sustainable festival that continues to showcase the beautiful Shuswap and enhance the quality of life for residents and the business community,” Tobin said in the release.

Early bird festival passes will be available on Dec. 5.
