After a steady drop in daily COVID-19 cases in B.C. in recent days, the numbers climbed up to 722 today from less than 600 just two days ago.

The Interior Health region, on the other hand, saw a drop to 38 new cases in the last 24 hours. Recent daily counts had been more than 50.

This comes at a time when the province has injected more than two million people with vaccines. Interior Health has injected approximately 335,000 doses.

“To date, 45% of those who are eligible have received at least one dose,” says a joint statement issued today, May 7, by provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix. “For everyone who has received their vaccine, we thank you for doing your part. For those who will soon be eligible, we encourage you to join this vaccine effort when it is your turn.”

Of the new cases, 523 were in the Fraser Health region, 115 in the Vancouver Coastal region, 20 in the Vancouver Island and 38 in the Northern Health region.

There were seven more deaths, bringing the provincial total to 1,602.

There are 6,757 active cases in B.C. with 445 people in hospital, 157 of whom are in intensive care.
