New background casting agency opens in Kamloops

Kamloops will have a stronger link to Hollywood with the opening of a new background casting agency.

Kammywood Casting is the brainchild of Candice Prince who in recent years has played a role in helping to cast films locally.

"My friend asked me to open an agency here," Prince says. "There's a big need, a big gap in the industry here in Kamloops. Here I am recently opened and already I have my first production."

Prince's company is casting for "a well known award-winning children TV series and a new baby (documentary) from the same company."

"I have a feature film I'm working on for November here in Kamloops," she said.

The names of the projects will remain confidential until after casting is finished.

"There are casting directors in Kelowna and surrounding areas but nothing for Kamloops. I know (with past productions) people have had to be brought in from all over the place and we really want to boost our local talent here in Kamloops," Prince said.

She also said there are significant benefits of casting locally.

"For example, say a production out of Vancouver reaches out to me to handle casting, and in that case they don't have to hire people from Vancouver, they don't have to drive down here. The cost to find the talent, pay for hotel, food, expenses, all kinds of stuff save the production (money). All that money goes back into Kamloops by hiring local," she said.

Casting on her current project remains open until Feb. 20.

"We're looking for more applicants, especially diverse applicants who will represent all of Canada," she said.

Casting calls can be found on the Kammywood Casting Instagram page here. The casting agency, along with production companies and local filmmakers, post cast and crew needs on the Film Kamloops Facebook group here.
