Chinese pianist Lang Lang to help Toronto Symphony Orchestra launch new season

TORONTO - Star Chinese pianist Lang Lang will help the Toronto Symphony Orchestra launch its 2013/14 season.

The 30-year-old will perform two Mozart piano concertos on Sept. 21 in a season-opening gala led by music director Peter Oundjian, who's celebrating his 10th season with the orchestra.

The new season will also feature the orchestra's first annual Chinese New Year concert featuring Long Yu, music director of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and pianist Yuja Wang on Feb. 3, 2014.

There will also be two world premiere performances as well as 30 artists making their Toronto Symphony Orchestra debut, including Grammy-nominated Canadian singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright on Oct. 11.

Other highlights of the orchestra's upcoming season include the 10th annual New Creations Festival next March, a new series of Friday night programming, and a celebration of the 100th anniversary of composer Benjamin Britten's birth that will include a violin concerto by Canadian James Ehnes (Oct. 10 and 12).

The orchestra's performances will be held at Roy Thomson Hall, with the season running from September through June 2014.
