A 23-year-old man has been charged with second degree murder following the death of a 19-year-old woman near Williams Lake.

Williams Lake RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious death in Esk'etemc, a First Nation community south of Williams Lake, on Dec. 20.

Officers arrived at a home with paramedics, where they confirmed the 19-year-old woman had died, then arrested a 23-year-old man outside the house, according to a Williams Lake RCMP news release.

"This is a tragic incident that should never have occurred," Insp. Lorne Wood said in the release. "Our thoughts are with all those impacted."

Wood works with the North District Major Crimes Unit, which has taken over the investigation.

Waylon Darian Harry, 23, is charged with second-degree murder and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan 12, 2022.

Police say the Major Crimes Unit, along with Williams Lake RCMP, Indigenous Policing Services, the RCMP forensic team and the B.C. Coroners Service are remaining in contact with the local government as they continue to investigate.
