Motorcyclist killed after hitting debris on Highway 1 in Fraser Canyon

A motorcycle hit the debris from a tractor-trailer that lost part of its load on Highway 1 north of Hope on Monday, killing one of the two people on the bike.

Officers were called to the crash at around 11:40 p.m. July 11, on the Trans-Canada south of the Sailor Bar Tunnel between Yale and Boston Bar, according to an RCMP media release.

Investigators said a northbound semi lost some of its load turning a corner and a southbound motorcycle with two riders from the Lower Mainland hit the debris on the highway.

The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene and the passenger was rushed to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. RCMP have not released the identities of the people on the motorcycle.

Highway 1 was closed for several hours for the investigation and to clear the highway.

Both the semi and the motorcycle are getting mechanical inspections.

“This truly was a tragic collision and our thoughts are with the victim’s family,” Hope RCMP detachment commander Staff Sgt. Dwayne Farlin said in the release.

Anyone that travelled the Fraser Canyon on July 11 that has dash cam footage or information related to this crash, is asked to contact the Boston Bar RCMP Const. Tessa Liu at 604-867-9333.
