Most of this week's expected snow has already fallen in Okanagan, Kamloops

Today's snowfall in Kamloops and the Okanagan is almost at an end and the rest of the week doesn't look quite as snowy.

“It’s almost over for this first event,” Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist told iNFOnews.ca today, Dec. 6. “Maybe another centimetre or two in the high terrain.”

That doesn’t mean the end to the snow, with a couple of centimetres expected tomorrow night and into Wednesday in the Okanagan. The snow should be lighter in Kamloops.

With daytime highs hovering around the freezing mark later in the week there might be a bit of melting but with overnight lows of -5 Celsius to -6 C on those mornings, the snow should stay around.

“I don’t expect the ground to return to green any time soon,” Lundquist said.

After record-breaking warmth on Dec. 1, the temperatures and conditions this week are typical of an average week, he said, noting that December is typically the coldest month of the year in the Okanagan and Kamloops.

More snow is expected on the weekend but it’s too early to predict how much that might be, just as it’s too early to forecast whether there will be a white Christmas.

There’s a 50-50 chance of it being snowy at Christmas in downtown Kelowna in any given year, about a 30% chance in Penticton and 100% chance in higher elevations like the Joe Rich are east of Kelowna, Lundquist said.
