Mortar round found on hiking trail in Kalamalka Lake park near Vernon

A fire fuel mitigation crew working in Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park found an unexploded ordnance this morning.

Crews were working along the Sidewinder Trail in the Cosens Bay area of the park near Vernon when they spotted what appeared to be the tail fin of a mortar round sticking out of the ground at around 9:15 a.m. today, Feb. 8, according to an RCMP press release.

“The area historically had been a training area for the military and used as a firing range for mortars and other ordnance,” Vernon RCMP spokesperson Const. Chris Terleski said in the release. “Similar items have been found in the past by park users."

Terleski said they have consulted with the RCMP explosives unit but because the mortar round is of military origin, the area has been secured and police are waiting for direction from the Canadian Armed Forces.

The Sidewinder Trail is closed and officers are there to direct people away from the possible ordnance.
