More winter shelter beds coming to North and Central Okanagan

Vernon-based Turning Points Collaborative is going to provide shelter for dozens more people in Vernon, Kelowna and West Kelowna this winter.

The currently vacant Our Place facility on 43 Street in Vernon will be opened to provide 13 beds for singles or couples who are ready to move out of the 86-bed Amalgamated Shelter on 37 Street into their own rooms, according to a Turning Points Collaborative media release. They will be provided with meals and supports.

Turning Points also has a motel room program for people in immediate need of shelter and have funding for 30 rooms this winter.

In Kelowna, the Turning Points emergency shelter on Richter Street will be expanded to provide 11 more spaces.

In West Kelowna, a temporary shelter on Bartley Road will be opened once construction is finished. This will provide shelter for up to 38 people.

Most of the new spaces are funded by B.C. Housing and the temporary spaces are expected to be used until the end of March.
