KELOWNA - For the past year Canada’s 150 birthday has been highly anticipated. Now that the milestone is approaching we’ve put together the events going on in the area so you can plan your day.

Over 50 activities are planned on July 1 in West Kelowna and Kelowna and while Kelowna has postponed its fireworks this year, you still have many options, including West Kelowna.

The 43rd Folkfest at Prospera Place goes from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. with folk dancing, singing, drumming and food from around the world. Food booths ranging from German sausages to Filipino spring roll desserts made of coconut, there is something for everyone. What what would be a birthday without a cake? The cake will be served around 1 p.m., after the opening ceremonies.

Feel like more food? A Taste of Canada food fair, showcasing food from 18 different vendors will be at Waterfront Park.

From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. a Made in Canada Marketplace will also be taking place at City Park. The market will have homemade Canadian arts and crafts on display and for purchase.

The Ki-low-na Friendship Society and Westbank First Nation are hosting a blanket exercise at Kerry Park at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Bring a blanket or a towel and get ready to learn. The exercise is meant to help people understand how the colonization of Canada has impacted First Nation communities.

Two bigger than life colouring murals have been created specifically for this years’ Canada Day festivities. Grab a crayon or marker and add your creative touch to the Opus Great Canadian Colour-In. They will be located at the Rhapsody Plaza near the Dolphin’s fountain.

Although all of the events above are kid friendly, there will be a Kids Zone, with inflatable bouncers and many more activities. Don’t let your kids miss out, the events will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kiwanis Kid Stage at the Pioneer Gardens.

If you’re looking for some quiet amongst the chaos this Canada Day, the Kelowna Art Gallery will be offering free admission.

Although there won’t be any fireworks in Kelowna for Canada Day this year, the Kelowna Concert Band will be playing at Prospera Place at 7:30 p.m.

For a full list of the Canada Day events check out the Festivals Kelowna website.

Just across the bridge in West Kelowna, there are also many festivities planned on Canada Day as part of the weekend long Westside Daze.

The events on July 1 start at 10:30 with a parade.

Various events will be going on all day in the field on Old Okanagan Highway, just past the Johnson Bentley Memorial Pool. A Canada Day 150 birthday cake cutting will be held at 3 p.m.

If you’re looking to get rid of some clutter around your house, the trunk sale is the perfect place for you. The giant garage sale will be held from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. The last performance for Saturday is scheduled at 10 p.m.

A full schedule of the Westside Daze events and musical performances can be found here.
