Members of the Summerland Legion are thankful after raising enough money over the past few days to cover what was stolen on the night after Remembrance Day.
The building was broken into overnight Nov. 11, and a large sum of cash – much of it raised on Remembrance Day – was stolen. At least $500 was taken from a jar, and over $3,000 was taken from an ATM, according to Patrick Macguire, vice president of the Legion.
“The response to the whole thing has been phenomenal,” he said.
An online fundraising campaign raised nearly $4,000 as of noon today, Nov. 15.

In addition, he said there has been a steady stream of people through the door with offers of help. A soup fundraiser on Sunday quickly sold out.
Beyond cash, many people have offered to donate professional services, Macguire said.
“The response has been so overwhelming,” he said. “It was a low blow but we’re going to get up and keep going. It’s amazing to belong to a community like this."
The Summerland Chamber of Commerce released a statement today to say members are saddened by the devastating theft. However, it serves as a reminder of the importance of standing together during an unprovoked attack on our community. The business group was also pleased to see such a strong response from the community.
