More than 400 paddlers from several indigenous communities will team up with RCMP officers and other public service workers and set off from Enderby on an eight-day canoe journey in the Shuswap.

After a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic, the Pulling Together Canoe Journey, will launch its boats tomorrow, July 12, before it arrives at Green Lake, a traditional summer gathering place for the Secwépemc People, on July 20.

The epic journey is a joint effort between the Indigenous community, youth, police and other public service agencies working towards reconciliation and mutual respect.

This year's journey is hosted by the Splatsin, Cstélnec (Adams Lake), Simpcw, and Tsq’escenemc (Canim Lake) First Nations, in cooperation with Tk’emlúps te Secwe?pemc, and promotes healing, reconciliation, and respect for Indigenous host nations as well as the sharing of Indigenous cultures.

The journey takes paddles in 25 canoes from Belvidere Park in Enderby and then stops at Grindrod Park, Mara Lake, Pierre’s Point and Blind Bay on Shuswap Lake. The canoeists will finally get back on dry land at Green Lake.

The first Pulling Together Canoe Journey was in 2001, inspired by the 1997 Vision Quest Journey that saw Indigenous Peoples and the RCMP paddle along B.C.'s west coast visiting Indigenous communities.

This event will be their 20th trip.
