For the first time ever, the number people in hospital in B.C. with a positive COVID test has passed the 1,000 mark.

There are now 1,048 people in B.C. hospitals who have COVID, 138 of whom are in intensive care, according to a Ministry of Health news release issued today, Jan. 31.

The number of people in intensive care is not a record.

All those who are in hospital and who have a positive COVID-19 test are listed, although only an estimated 55% may actually be in hospital because of COVID.

Over the weekend 4,075 cases of COVID were recorded in B.C. That includes 1,725 from Friday to Saturday, 1,293 from Saturday to Sunday and 1,057 in the last 24 hours.

There were 1,182 new cases recorded in the Interior Health region, 1,225 in Fraser Health, 645 in Vancouver Coastal, 575 on Vancouver Island and 447 in the Northern Health region.

Since most B.C. residents with COVID are told they don’t need to get tested or may take a rapid test, the actual number of cases is likely three to four times higher, health officials have said.

Over the weekend, 19 people in B.C. died of COVID, including eight in Interior Health, bringing the pandemic total to 2,616.

There are 27,454 active cases in B.C.

The vaccination rate for people over the age of 12 is 92.7% with at least one dose, 90.1% for those with at least two doses and 45.9% with three doses.
